ARTWORK GUIDELINES

At Rushprintnyc.com we believe that good art leads to good printing. Below are some tips to ensure your art is set up correct to print.

1. ACCEPTED FILE TYPES

UPLOADING YOUR OWN DESIGN

We accept high-resolution single page .pdf. Please make sure you follow the below steps
- Must have at least a .125” bleed and .25” safety/safe margin from the trim/cut margin
(definitions on safety, trim and bleed below).
- Please outline all fonts to avoid any font jumping.
- For Borders please come at least .25” from the edge to allow for a slight shift in paper trim to ensure your border does not get trimmed off.
- Please include crop marks at the trim line only of your final single page .pdf.
- If you have any further questions on file set up please email us at [email protected]

IN OUR DESIGN STUDIO

We accept .jpg, .pdf, .png, .tiff or .svg files to upload into the design studio when designing your own or adding to one of our creative professional design templates. The designer tool supports transparent .png files for advanced layering designs.

2. BLEED, TRIM/CUT MARGIN AND SAFETY/SAFE MARGIN

BLEED - This is the artwork box past the red dotted line labeled Cut Margin. Bleed is necessary if you want your design to go to the edge of the paper. Bleed should extend .125” past the trim/cut line on your design. This area will be cut off so make sure there is no important information or necessary design elements in this area.

TRIM/CUT MARGIN - This is the red dotted line that shows where your item will be cut and is the final size. Make any text or borders are at least .25” away from this edge so that it does not get trimmed off.

SAFETY/SAFE MARGIN - This is the green dotted line The safety area is a .25” border around the inside of the final cut size. All critical elements (text, images, graphics, etc.) should stay inside this area to avoid being trimmed off if it is not meant to bleed.

3. IMAGE RESOLUTION

We recommend that your image be high-resolution taken directly from your digital camera, purchased from stock photography sites or photographers original digital files. Taking photos from online photo sites including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter will give you a poor image quality as these images have been converted to a lower resolution file to be able to view faster on the internet. Accepted files: .jpg, .pdf, .png, .tiff or .svg.

4. COLOR ON SCREEN V.S. COLOR WHEN PRINTED

4 Color Process printing or commonly called Full Color printing is made up of 4 colors, Cyan Magenta Yellow & K for Black. Computer screens represent full color using 3 colors Red Green Blue, plus or minus light. Because a computer screen can vary the brightness of the light behind those colors, RGB has a larger gamut (the entire range of colors available on a particular device such as a monitor or printer) than full color CMYK printing therefore some colors may appear brighter on screen or there may be a slight color shift to a darker shade when printed on press. If you are concerned about color we recommend you check colors with a Pantone® swatch book prior to printing. We print in 4 Color Process and the Pantone® swatch book will have 4 dots next to any color that can be accurately represented with CMYK printing. Any Pantone® colors other than that we will do our very best to get as close as possible. This color shift is most pronounced in spot colors and is why when designing logos or branding with a specific spot color we recommend verifying it is CMYK compatible first to ensure your printed results match your expectations. Our press is equipped with special densitometers that read the color value of every sheet and adjusts on the fly between sheets to ensure you receive the finest quality possible.

5. CHOOSING BLACK

RICH BLACK - Is made up of all CMYK colors broken down to 30% Cyan, 30% Magenta, 30% Yellow and 100% Black. We recommend using rich black for large areas/backgrounds or very thick type 32pt+

SINGLE COLOR BLACK - Is made up of just black in CMYK broken down to 0% Cyan, 0% Magenta, 0% Yellow and 100% Black. We recommend using single color black for thin type or smaller than 32pt.
